From the Bergamot tree native to Europe and South Asia, this essential oil is obtained by cold compression of the rind of this fruit which looks like a hybrid between a lemon and an orange.
Historically, Bergamot Essential Oil was majorly used in aromatherapy for its calming effects on the nervous system, but has in recent years shown to be very beneficial in the areas of skin, hair care and holistic healing.

Generally known to be safe, but should be diluted properly.
Children, pregnant and nursing women should avoid, also if on photosensitizing medications as may cause serious adverse reactions.
Like all citrus oils e.g Lemon, Grapefruit, Bergamot can be irritating if skin is exposed to harsh sunlight within 12 hours of application.
Tisserand and Young recommend IFRA dermal maximum of 0.4% be maintained to avoid phototoxicity.
