Caring for your oils.

Balsam of Peru Essential Oil Nigeria

Hallo Peeps,

How art thou? Hope you are enjoying our little posts and finding them informative.

Caring for your oils is so very important, all oils have a shelf life and the way you care for them ensures they stay potent so you can take advantage of their properties for as long as possible.

The most important thing you need to know is.....Heat is not your friend!

Heat causes the more volatile constituents in oils (especially EOs) to evaporate more quickly, so exposing your oils to sunlight and/or extreme heat over a prolonged period of time can and most probably will change its chemical composition and evaporation rate—therefore, the efficacy—of even the purest essential oils, for carrier oils it may cause them to go rancid.

Avoid keeping your oils in the car, near windows, or next to any heat source for extended periods of time.

Carrier oils and massage blends will also benefit by being stored in this way. However, all oils have a shelf life, some last longer than others but no oil lasts forever.

What is oxidization? Oxygen is vital for human survival but has the opposite reaction on oils. When oxygen gets into your bottle, it reacts with some of the constituents which begins a process that is known as oxidation Of course every time you open your bottle, it’s inevitable that oxygen will enter unless you live on Mars, but locking them securely and keeping them so until when you want to use them again helps slow this process down considerably.

Storing your oils properly: To keep the potency of your oils as high as possible for as long as possible, it is generally recommended that you use dark bottles for storage.

If you make your own blends, we recommend you follow the traditional practice of storing all oils in black/amber/violet glass bottles, as dark colored bottles protect the oils from damaging ultraviolet light.

Now we have gotten all the terminology out of the way, lets move on to the fun stuff.

Till we speak again,

Peace & Love,

Naturally Yours

Mo!
