Sun damage, botanicals and skin!

Hi everyone,

How are things? Its less than a month to my 2 favorite times of the year.....harmattan and then Christmas!! I'm actually counting the days off on my calendar...lol.

In my last post i talked about some effects of sun exposure on the skin and the importance of adequate protection to prevent sun damage which can cause wrinkles, leathery skin, sun spots, uneven skin tone, inflammations, increased sensitivity, darkening of the skin, depletion of moisture etc.

Today i'll talk about some botanicals with skin cell regenerative, rejuvenating, anti inflammatory, antibacterial, antiseptic and other properties that can help soothe, cool and calm the effects of sun damage and help improve skin health, elasticity and complexion for brighter, younger looking, smooth skin

Some essential oils with proven potency in helping treat sun damage,a few of them are even reputed to help prevent skin cancer are Helichrysum, Neroli, Wild Carrot Seed, Frankincense Myrrh, Labdanum, Elemi, Sea buckthorn seed and Winter Cherry

Other options include: Balsam of Peru, Cajeput, Calendula, Galbanum, Java Citronella, Lavender, Tulsi and Rose Geranium

Cold pressed Bergamot EO's relationship with the sun and skin is a bit complicated. Like some other citrus EOs it can cause photo toxicity and increase photo sensitivity if skin is exposed to sun less than 12-14 hours after topical application. However, when diluted properly and the proper cautions are taken it is an amazing aid in treating sun damage.

Other EOs that can be phototoxic include; German chamomile, Tagetes (not calendula), Cinnamon bark, Tumeric,Cassia, Bay, Angelica root and cold pressed Lime, Oppoponax, Dill, Cumin, Ginger etc.

Every single carrier oil in our range is not just an excellent base for your blends but are also chock full of properties that can help regenerate skin, fight sun damage, reverse the signs of premature aging, fight free radical damage etc.

Other beneficial botanicals include, Aloe vera, dark honey, oatmeal, raw potatoes, certain hydrosols, clays, teas, butters, powders etc. are also beneficial in soothing sun damage

Note: You still need to take adequate steps to protect your skin from over exposure.

Lets summarize:

1. Sun damage just isn't the business

2. Essential oils & carrier oils can help reverse the damage, some do it better than others.

3. Some essential oils can be phototoxic and should be diluted and used properly

4. Other botanicals can also help

5. You still need that sunblock/screen mega combo and wear sun protective clothing.
